Organic farmer Alexandros Lieberopoulos takes care of the Xotari estate in Kea, where the soils are shallow, plowing is done with mules and irrigation is impossible. In addition to dried almonds, medicinal plants such as oregano, thyme, balsam herb (swordweed), rosemary, etc. are grown or harvested on the property.
In Greece it is one of the most popular medicinal herbs. It is also known as ferrite due to its high iron content, and as malotira (in Crete) from the Italian words male (sickness) and tirare (tired). It is a traditional beverage for the treatment of colds and inflammations of the upper respiratory system, as well as indigestion and gastrointestinal disorders. It fights anemia due to the high concentrations of iron it contains, and is considered a spasmolytic, analgesic, healing, sweating and tonic herb.
